We're talking to Ryan Simchowitz today folks.  Ryan has been with us at CFNZ for a couple of years now, and just recently he's moved to RCF09 due to his living closer.  But he still drops in at NZ for a workout now and then.    As a young guy from a running background, he fools a lot of much bigger dudes, when it's squat day!  Pairing up with him on a rack rapidly gives you an appreciation for grit and effort.  Ryan works hard every day he's in the gym, and does his homework when he's out.    It's always a pleasure to coach him!
How were you introduced to CrossFit?
One evening in 2011, I switched on TV and 20/20 was on. I saw a group of people training for a charity run from Wellington to Auckland and CrossFit was part of their training.  So I went online to find the nearest location. I remember ringing (through the NZ relay- hearing impaired relay system) Darren and speaking to him about when I could sign up,  and how he could help with communicating with me. Man, he was so friendly and he still is ☺ He rocks! I don’t know what the community would do without him!
What do you like most about being a member at CFNZ?
How the coaches help with any goats or give advice on nutrition or injuries. If one person finishes the workout first or last, we stay and cheer each other on until everyone is done. Making new friends at the gym has been awesome too.  The coaches are all awesome too, I love how much knowledge they know and share it with us all.
Greatest CrossFit accomplishment to date?
Increasing my mobility, MU.
What kind of music / favorite song you like listening to during a WOD?
I’m deaf so it doesn’t matter......... Unless you install a massive sound system and have it up so loud that the walls shake.......!! :)
Do you have any pre-WOD rituals? If so, what are they?
Take my hearing aids off, have some water, decide if I need to go to the bathroom or tie up my shoe laces properly haha.
What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
Running, bodyweight exercises and squats.
Interesting fact about yourself that most people may not know?
My whole family is Deaf and we all use NZ Sign Language at home.
I used to study marine engineering but now have completely changed and started studying to become a chef. (Paleo I hope Ryan, not pastries.....? :)
