We're talking to Sam Haslett today, seeing what makes him tick.....

What is your favourite non clean eating treat?

  • Kapiti feijoa ice-cream (perks of my dad working for Fonterra)

How long have you been a member at Reebok CrossFit 09?

  •  8 Months

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Was there a pivotal event that led you to us? Can you remember your first CrossFit experience? What was it like and how did you feel?  Excited? Nervous?    

  • Roughly 1 year ago I moved to AKL after finishing up down at Otago Uni, and landing myself a job in AKL; prior to moving up I spent the Summer at home in the Hawkes Bay in which there was a new cross training gym that had opened opposite our house in the race course (laterally 30 metres from my door step). After my first session there I was hooked, and moving up to AKL I tried several CrossFit gyms I came across 09 which felt much more welcoming and had greater space than other inner city CrossFit gyms in AKL.
  • 1st session - memory isn't the greatest, but was defiantly excited to get back into it and to meet new people.
  • My Nano's, I have only had them for a short period of time, but offer great flexibility between Olympic lifting movements and the likes rowing/running etc.

Is there a piece of training equipment you can't live without?

sam_hWhat are you doing when you aren't CrossFitting?

  • I have met a huge amount of awesome people while down at Uni in Dunedin, and a large proportion of those people are now in Auckland for work, so I enjoy my social life greatly catching up with those people. Otherwise making the most of the fine weather, through playing tennis or going to the many beaches AKL has to offer.

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

  • Greater balance in my lifestyle, both through workouts and cleaner eating; a nice change from 4 years at Uni.

..And now what about something that isn't related to fitness or exercise?

  • My nickname/most commonly called name is Hazzy

Are you a barbell or kettle bell lover? Favourite movement?

  • Barbell - Back squats and dead lifts

What is your athletic background?

  • Have always loved my sports and been very competitive in which I have been involved in; rugby, tennis, multi-sport and in my later years mountain biking and cycling. Also did a marathon in Dunedin (retired now though 😉 )

Is there a Reebok CrossFit 09 member who inspires you?

  • Everyone's awesome. love seeing people of different fitness levels getting amongst it together!

Greatest exercise related accomplishment to date?

  • Either 139kg back squat or getting my first strict muscle up

Interesting fact about yourself that most people may not know?

  • aHHHH I went to 6 different schools throughout my school days.
