Member Profile – Ryan Simchowitz


Talking to Ryan Simchowitz today, he was orignally a member at CFNZ, and is now a regular at RCF09.

What is your favourite non clean eating treat?

I would have to say chocolates or pizza.

How long have you been a member at Reebok CrossFit 09?

Almost a year I think after moving over from CFNZ :)

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

One evening a few years ago, I saw on TV a group of people training for a charity run and Crossfit was part of their training. So I went online to find the nearest location.

Can you remember your first CrossFit experience? What was it like and how did you feel? Excited? Nervous?

I was so nervous and didn't know what to expect. I thought I would be fit enough to do the workouts but unfortunately not.

Is there a piece of training equipment you can't live without?

I think it would be a pull up bar because you can do so many different exercises with it.

What are you doing when you aren't CrossFitting? 

Working as a chef, spending time with family and friends, doing outdoor/indoor activities.  

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

My diet- I have Crohn's Disease so what I eat will affect how I feel today or the day after.

..And now what about something that isn't related to fitness or exercise?

Are you a barbell or kettle bell lover? Favourite movement?

Most probably a barbell because I love to do SQUATS!

What is your athletic background?

Football player, runner.

Is there a Reebok CrossFit 09 member who inspires you?

Everyone at the gym, including the coaches of course. I LOVE how if one person finishes the workout first or last, we stay and cheer each other on until everyone is done!

Greatest exercise related accomplishment to date?

Increasing my mobility, 80kg clean (almost had the jerk) :)

Interesting fact about yourself that most people may not know?

My whole family is Deaf and we all use NZ Sign Language. I used to study marine engineering but not have completely changed and become a chef.
