Member profile – Fabian Mirrione

Krista caught up with Fabian Mirrione just before she headed away.  Read on to meet another of our amazing community members!

How long have you been a member at Reebok CrossFit 09?

Since November 2013.

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

I used to go to a « normal » gym but got really bored. One friend was very much into CrossFit and told me to give a try so I searched for gyms around Auckland and the 09 was really close to my place.

Can you remember your first CrossFit experience? What was it like and how did you feel? Excited? Nervous?

Yes I can clearly remember! Nervous for sure and I quickly realized that I wasn´t fit to do a workout with such high intensity.  I was also very impressed by the fitness level of the 09 members and how supportive they were.

What are your favourite training shoes?

I use a pair of Saucony running shoes. They start to be old and are definitely too soft for heavy lifting but I like them :)

What are you doing when you aren't CrossFitting?

During the week, my job in the water supply team for Watercare keeps me fairly busy. And apart of Crossfit I play Indoor soccer (5a-side) once per week and try to practice kitesurfing during the week-end.

What sort of changes have you noticed since starting CrossFit?

Hard to say precisely but when I started I could barely do snatches, handstands or pull-ups. I feel that my whole body is stronger and at the same time my mobility has improved. That´s a great feeling.

What is your favourite CrossFit exercise and describe your perfect workout?

I have always enjoyed push-presses but since my technique has improved I really have fun doing snatches and jerks. Perfect workout is a 7 to 8 min AMRAP with a mix of KB swings, push presses and some (not too many… 😉 )burpees. However I am terrible with the jumping rope.

What is your athletic background?

I started going to the gym when I was 17 and kept going since then. Last year I also did the Auckland half marathon which was a good experience.

Is there a Reebok CrossFit 09 member who inspires you?

Hehe, plenty I would say :) Very impressed by Jo and how she managed to reach the regionals CF games. Krista, Nira, Joe and Bjorn are always pushing everyone to be better. Gerald is a good example of daily motivation and I still cannot understand how Leon can run so fast during AMRAP sessions (he must have a third lung…)

Greatest CrossFit accomplishment to date?

My shoulder mobility was really bad when I started and I was recently very pleased to manage to do an OH squat which tends to prove that things have been improving J

You have just been on the most incredible world wide adventure, do you feel your CrossFit training helped with the exploring?

Crossfit helps to gain more confidence and to push your limits. It brings you out of your comfort zone but by doing this you regularly it feels that anything else is easy…so yes it helps exploring.

What would you like to have achieved at Reebok CrossFit 09 a year from now?

I want to walk on my hands !

Interesting fact about yourself that most people may not know?

Well, I´m currently preparing a 6 month travel that will bring me through Asia and Central  America. If I find a good place I might stay a bit longer J
