What Campbell's Law is saying, is that as soon as a number is used as the measurement for something, someone will get clever and start gaming the number, believing that they're also improving the performance, when, all they're doing is making the number go up.

You see it in school a lot, with people getting really really good at taking the tests necessary to advance, but perhaps aren't really learning much in the process.

In this industry we see it happen a lot with bodyweight.   People are more obsessed with the number on the scale vs actual health.

Fight Gone Bad is a classic CrossFit workout.  A score over 300 reps is pretty darn good.  Over 400 is epic.  A while back, people figured out that if they change the order of exercises so that push press was first, they could get a massive amount of reps out of the first minute.  Then someone else figured out that if you didn't do any rowing on the erg at ALL, the extra rest it gave, allowed you to score far more points in the higher value exercises.

It's now common to see scores over 500.......but are these people fitter, or just being sneaky?

It's ok to want to be faster, but not at the expense of better.

You may find that running a little slower on the 200m runs in todays metcon, allows you to do more burpees and getting a bigger score.

But what if you ran as hard as you could?  You might be so gassed that those burpees will be twice as hard to do; you might score a few reps shy of what you could if you gamed it.  But perhaps, you'd be better for it.
