Coach Profile – Morgan Schaeffer

We're talking to Morgan Schaeffer today - our token American (you need one to make your CrossFit gym legit :)  She hails from Las Vegas  but has been training with us for years now at CFNZ, was on the Regionals team in 2013 and runs our kids program at both gyms.  We can always count on the energy being higher in class when Morgan is there!

When did you start CrossFitting?
2011 at CFNZ

Can you remember your first workout? Comments?
Had to do with running and sit ups - I don't remember being in pain I just remember thinking that was awesome!

Where in the world would you most like to travel?
Well I'm afraid of flying so... that narrows it down too, well New Zealand was always a place I wanted to travel to and then I moved here! But I have yet to see all of the South Island further south than Nelson, so that would be next. I grew up in Vegas, moved to NZ in 2010 and my parents liked to travel so I have been to many places like Germany, UK, Italy, Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, France, Australia. My favourite would have to be New Zealand, second place Canada.

If you were on an island and could only bring 3 things (not people),
what would you bring?
A dog! Seeds to plant food and a really thick book! One that I wouldn't mind rereading over and over again.

Favourite and least favourite exercise?
Favourite is Snatch and least favourite ummm Oooo double kettlebell squat cleans.

Morgs

How did you get into coaching? What was it about it that interested you at first?
I was a horse trainer first so it started with teaching kids how to ride horses. My brother is a strength and conditioning coach so he got me into CrossFit and once I started I fell in love with it and really wanted to start coaching. It initially started with the CrossFit Kids and Teens program and now here I am with adults!

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play you, and why?
I have no rhyme or reason but I want Emma Watson, I really like her, she can even keep the accent! She would portray me so well because she is a great actress

Which super power would you like to have?
I would like to be able to read peoples minds, on command though, not just all the time.

Do you have a big training goal for 2015? And any other cool things planned this year?
No big training goals, just working on foot rehab, but I'm dialling it back from being extremely competitive, I am focussing on the fitness side of it.

Which time period would you travel to if you had a time machine? And why?
I like the time period I was born in, I am happy here, we have all the technology and the world has not died. I am very happy with my time period, I like being a 90s baby.

What mentors/coaches/influences have you had in your journey as an athlete and as a coach? Any major lessons you'd like to share with us?
Darren with all his amazing knowledge and amazing programming which has helped my become a great athlete. Craig would be a big one, with pushing me that one step further. Krista with her amazing positivity, encouragement and always striving for perfection, as well as being an amazing training partner and Amanda with her tweaking of my Olympic lifts in the beginning which have come so far since.

What was the last movie you watched?
Just went to American Sniper, it was great!

What was the last book you read?
Ooo I just finished it two days ago, Unwind, it is a dystopian novel.

What is your favourite workout music?
I can actually workout in silence and do so if I'm on my own.

What do you do for fun outside of work? Besides CrossFit of course....
I read lots of books! And I hang out with my darling boyfriend Logan.

What would we always find in your fridge??
Broccoli, cream and butter.. and dark chocolate but it always disappears.

What do you like the most about coaching?
I love being a part of improving someones life through their fitness and health.
