Athlete Profile – Megan McNaughton

What is your favourite non clean eating treat?

Probably ice cream, that and reduced cream and onion soup dip mmmmmmmm dip.

How long have you been a member at Reebok CrossFit 09?

Almost a year

How did you end up walking through our doors for the first time? Was there a pivotal event that led you to us?

I saw a sign for another (somewhat inferior) crossfit box and googled it. RCF09 came up first and it was just down the road from my house. I liked the logo too (shallow I know but I used to work in design so I notice these things). I'd just seen some photos of myself from the Christmas holidays and was horrified - I'd had some years off the gym and 3 babies so I needed to pull myself back together.

Can you remember your first CrossFit experience? What was it like and how did you feel? Excited? Nervous?

I remember being terrified about being in with the big kids, I just wanted to stand near the back and blend in. I was just hoping they weren't going to make me run! I'd been in hospital briefly during my induction week so took it very very slowly!

Is there a piece of training equipment you can't live without?

erm nope.....

What are you doing when you aren't training?

I've been at home with my kids for 6 years now - pretty much a soccer mom (although I refuse to own a station wagon). In a former life I was a production/studio manager for a design agency I LOVED it and can't wait to go back.

What has been one of the biggest things in your life that has changed since starting CrossFit?

I'm a genuinely happier person and significantly nicer to be around. I think all that positivity is rubbing off on me.

Are you a barbell or kettle bell lover? Favourite movement?

Kettle bell. I like the plain old kettle bell swing.

What is your athletic background?

Of all the people I know I'd say I'd be the most unsporty person - athletic is a word that doesn't spring to mind when I think about myself. I did do a lot of swimming, windsurfing and waterpolo when I was at school and I have been skiing since I was 2.

Is there a Reebok CrossFit 09 member who inspires you?

I'm inspired by everyone who gives it a go - it can be a little daunting at times for me but I can't believe how supportive and encouraging everyone is.

Greatest exercise related accomplishment to date?

A handstand! I was truly terrified and was so convinced I'd never be able to do one. Usually if I can't do something the first time I won't ever try it again (I need to work on that!) but I was determined to do this.

Interesting fact about yourself that most people may not know?

I won a kids (up to 12 years) rowing race when I was 18 months old - I was too short for the seat so I had to stand up and row. I won 20 cents and some lollies!

Week 3 of working on the muscle up and assistance drills today.  Remember, even the simplest progression is of great benefit when it comes to gymnastic skills and drills.  Plus, it's great to down from that furious metcon pace once in a while to focus exclusively on mastery of movement.
