Paleo - the worst diet?

kellan-lutz-hercules-before-after-lead1

Hollywood Live reports that despite the 'danger' of the Paleo diet, actor Kellan Lutz used the Paleo Diet to gain enough muscle to play the role of Hercules.  Hmmm.....

U.S. News reported on Jan. 7 that the Paleo Diet is the worst diet for 2014!!!

U.S. News & World Report‘s experts said: “the Paleo Diet was too restrictive for most people to follow long term,  and that it limited some essential nutrients. They also cited a lack of research proving the Paleo Diet’s cardiovascular health and weight loss benefits in their ranking.”

What do they really mean by restrictive?  That most people don't want to give up fries, coca cola and cronuts for  meat, veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds?

A lack of essential nutrients is a common one pitched at Paleo by mainstream nutritionists and the average dieter.  Getting rid of all that flour, cereal and sugar does sound like a recipe for malnutrition (*insert sarcasm font here.....) but believe it or not, you can get a ton of good stuff out of good quality meat, veggies, fruit etc.  You might have seen a recent post that showed a comparison of beef liver to fruit.  And here's a great post from Robb Wolf doing a comparison of the average western diet with a more Paleo one for nutrient density.

Despite the bad press from the hacks above, did you know that Paleo was the MOST SEARCHED diet term on Google in 2013?!  It's huge!  And with good reason.  It tastes good, it is easy to follow and adhere to, and it works!

Luckily for us, it is getting easier to eat Paleo outside the comfort of your own home too.  Our good friends Dannee and Jigisha Patel around the corner at Columbus Cafe have created meals just for us! And will happily mix and match foods to ensure you're getting what you need.  Wilder and Hunt down the road a ways, will hook you up with a post workout smoothie to die for, a complete meal to take home if you're tight on time, and a gluten free treat for the weekend too...  Then companies like Feed Me and That Good can deliver fresh or frozen food for you to heat up and devour at your convenience.

And of course, anyone who knows Paleo has realised by now, that a big smile to your wait staff at almost any restaurant will get you a quality piece of protein, a plate full of veggies, and some olive oil, avocado, or butter on the side - too easy!

Of course, this is now the time that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon.  I saw an ad on GrabOne yesterday that promoted ready made Paleo meals, but they were not only low carb, but low fat as well, or in other words, no energy and probably no taste!  I'm not saying that a boiled chicken breast with some steamed broccoli isn't Paleo, because it's better than nothing, and better than a grain heavy meal.   But it's typical misunderstanding of what eating real food is all about, and cutting out all the fat is a classic move from conventional nutrition.

Focus on the main points - lots of veggies, good quality animal protein, no grains or sugar, not too many starchy carbs and fruit (but it's ok on occasion), and decent servings of fat.
