An easy life is not one of envy

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.” - Theodore Roosevelt

I read an article recently, that talked about the issues martial arts schools faced with making the journey to black belt too easy.

I've spoken before about this in a similar vein.  How on earth is this kid able to wear a black belt?  He's barely stopped wearing a diaper!

Well apparently for years, “experts” in the mainstream industry have stated that the reason martial arts schools can't retain their members, is because they made things too hard and students didn’t feel like they’re progressing.   So increasing the frequency of gradings, kept members happy, hooked them into trying for the next grading, and of course, it didn't hurt that more gradings meant more profit for the business.

Sounds uncannily like the fitness industry.

Read or watch any advert/billboard/article/testimonial and most fitness related companies will have you believe that getting in shape is easy.

Only six weeks to a lean physique!!  Seven minute abs!!

It's literally a TRILLION dollar industry.......

But just lately, there's been a shift.    This article talked about it happening from the context of the martial arts industry.

People are moving away from the modernised martial arts such as tae kwon do and karate and hapkido (with their typical 2-3 year pathway from white belt to black) in favour of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA and Krav Maga.  The latter two don't even use belt gradings!

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it will take upwards of 10 years to earn a black belt.  Someone with a blue belt, the very first progression from beginner, is freaking STOKED to have attained it. They are proud of the work done simply to have attained a solid grasp of the basic movements.

And now it will take them a MINIMUM of another two years of training, before they can consider their next grading.

We're starting to see this shift in fitness too.

As simple as that skinny girl, or jacked guy on Instagram is trying to make it, making a significant change in your health and fitness actually takes a considerable effort of time, physical effort, mental energy and time.

Did I just say time twice?  Yep, it's important..... no 7 minute abs.   Especially not 6...

People are not into 'belts' anymore.

They want the knowledge.

And they're finally ready to work for it.

We see it in here every day.

Real Fitness

Our parent gym, CrossFit NZ opened way back in 2008. The purpose was to help people set tangible goals for their health and fitness, and then achieve them.   Producing elite athletes was not really on the list. But although we've had more than a little success in that arena, it still isn’t our primary aim.…
